Antique Italian Ring, 9k Rose Gold and Mother of Pearl 1850s
Antique ring crafted in solid 9 carats rose gold, mother of pearl and seed pearl.
Southern Italy, ca. 1850.
Two luminous mother-of-pearl stones sit within the sinuous gold structure, accompanied by tiny pearls that add delicate points of light. The soft iridescence of the nacre contrasts beautifully with the distinctive warm coppery tone of the rose gold, a characteristic colour often encountered in Bourbon jewellery from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
Particularly interesting is the construction of the ring. The gold elements are made using the historic “a canna vuota” technique (hollow tubing), a method that allowed goldsmiths to create voluminous and sculptural designs while keeping the jewel surprisingly light. This refined and labour-intensive technique has largely disappeared from modern jewellery making.
