Antique 14k Gold Ring with Turquoise and Old Mine Cut Diamonds “Friendship” Engraving

Antique ring crafted with solid 14k gold, turquoise and natural diamonds.

First half of 1800.

This remarkable early Victorian ring (dated 1846) is an exquisitely sentimental piece. It is not only beautiful but also historically meaningful, carrying an engraved dedication inside the band: “L.D. to S.W. 1846” and, separately, “Friendship.” These personal messages suggest the ring was a meaningful gift, perhaps a promise ring, a memento of deep platonic affection, or a symbol of loyalty during a long separation. A true 19th-century token of affection and loyalty.

The ring features a raised oval cluster at the centre, composed of five bright turquoise cabochons. Surrounding them is a halo of antique old mine–cut diamonds, full of fire and with the charming irregularity typical of hand-cut 19th-century stones. Along the shoulders, a row of additional turquoise cabochons forms a continuous band of vivid colour.

The turquoise shows natural variation from robin-egg blue to teal: exactly what you want to see in genuine 19th-century stones. The diamonds appear to be around 0.02 ct each; however, because antique cuts are thicker and more “chunky” than modern brilliant cuts, their actual weight is likely a bit higher. They still retain their lively sparkle despite nearly two centuries of age.
