Antique rotating fob handcrafted with solid 14k gold and glass intaglio.
End 1800s, Victorian age.
The oval glass, in warm amber or carnelian tones, is engraved with a mythological scene depicting Jupiter and Ganymed.
In the legend, Jupiter, enamoured by the mortal beauty of the young Ganymede, transforms himself into a majestic eagle and carries the boy to Olympus, where he becomes the cupbearer of the gods and the symbol of divine favour.
Beyond its mythological charm, the story has long been interpreted as a metaphor for spiritual ascent, beauty, and the union between mortal and divine love. In later centuries, it also became a discreet emblem of homoerotic affection and celestial desire, celebrated in art, poetry, and jewelry throughout the neoclassical and Victorian eras.
This story, mentioned in Homer's Iliad, has long symbolised divine love and homoerotic beauty, an allegory of the soul's ascent and the union between mortal and divine.
The reverse side of the glass is smooth, while the gold mount allows the fob to rotate: a feature typical of Victorian watch fobs, originally designed to hang from a gentleman's chain. Today, it can be beautifully worn as a pendant, carrying both historical resonance and timeless sensuality.
