Antique Silver Mother-of-Pearl Pendant Necklace - Arts & Crafts c1900
Antique necklace made with solid silver and mother of pearl.
England, c. 1900s, Arts & Crafts period.
A rare and elegant example of English Arts and Crafts design, this antique pendant necklace is handcrafted in sterling silver and features two stunning cabochons of shimmering mother-of-pearl. The luminous play of light across the nacre brings a gentle iridescence that changes with every movement, an exquisite touch of natural beauty. The upper section of the pendant displays a horizontally-set oval shell, while the lower part is delicately framed in freeform silver wirework surrounding a second mother-of-pearl cabochon, suspended in a sculptural drop. T
he original period chain is beautifully twisted and fastens with its original toggle clasp: a detail highly characteristic of authentic Arts and Crafts pieces.
Pendant size: approx. 1.9” x 0.7” (48 x 18 mm)
Chain length: approx. 19.3” (49 cm)
Weight: 6 grams
There are no visible hallmarks that I could find, but the piece has been tested and confirmed as silver.
Very good antique condition, with signs of time and use to be expected in an antique piece of jewelry.
Facts: The Arts and Crafts Movement was an artistic and social movement that emerged in Britain in the late 19th century (c. 1880–1920), as a reaction against industrial mass production. It celebrated craftsmanship, natural materials, and simple, honest design, often inspired by nature and medieval forms. Each piece was meant to be both beautiful and handmade, a true work of art.
